We Are What We Wear?

Fashion is a big deal to young people nowadays. Over the decades, fashion has evolved and changed in so many ways. Fashion has gone from flary seventies styles to modern trendy ones. Like I said, fashion has been evolving through the years plus it has also been revolving through time. An example of such revolution is the "vintage style." Just when you think it is too old-fashioned, a lot even the young people buy the vintage stuff. Basically, fashion has a great influence not only to the youth but to everyone else here on Earth. Clothes have influenced everyone especially young people to wear what's in. Just like the vintage fashion being in-style, young people wear it but does that mean it defines the young to be old? Is a teenage girl now a boring old lady just because she wears comfortable loafers instead of really-high-killer-red-stilletos?

My answer would be a great "no!" I am entitled to such answer because no, we are not what we wear. As Shakira wound sing it: "Underneath those clothes, there's an endless story..." We are not what we wear because underneath all the clothes we wear is not merely our naked bodies but there is actually more to it. What we wear is merely the exterior. The clothes we wear don't necessarily reflect our true self. Yes, at times it could mirror our current mood but it is not a shovel that digs deeper than that. You could say a girl is fashionable just by looking at chic outfits she wears but could you already know her name? A person could go around town the whole day wearing modest apparel with those big geeky glasses looking all smart but would that classify him as intellectual? Or even worse as "gay" if he wears pink! If you think so then you didn't know that pink is supposedly a guy's color somewhere in the early 1930's or you are just not open-minded. Look at it this way, you wouldn't just know what happens in the Twilight Saga if you just read the cover would you? With that, there is more that meets the eye so we are not what we wear.

We are not what we wear because they are just clothes. The clothes we put on are merely materials to either cover our body, keep us warm and well or even perhaps to show off the artist in us. What we wear is just merely different types of clothes which are by products of Fashion or art not our character. Such clothes, are not words that describe us. Clothes just simply cover us, it does not talk and justify others of who we really are. Just like a school uniform for example, you would definitely know whether he/she is a student just by looking at the school crest stuck on his/her uniform and you might even identify which school the student comes from but would you already know if the student does well in school? You might say his neat appearance could prove him smart or her untidy state could describe her irresponsible but you would certainly not be sure. He could just be a neat freak but is actually superficial and vain or she could be untidy but just didn't have time to tidy up from a crucial science experiment.

Many young people nowadays experiment a lot with fashion. Both boys and girls mix and match up their closets for something decent or fashionable to wear but clothes do not define a person's character. One famous cover girl slash super model who also likes to experiment a lot with clothes is Tyra Banks. Now the majority of young people know her to be a total fashionista who would always know what to wear but little did we know that she's a philanthropist. We'd only expect Banks to invest her earned money perhaps from modelling or "America's Next Top Model" on fashion but she's actually one of the board of advisers for the Yele Haiti Foundation and she also supports three more charity foundations. Tyra Banks is just one of those fashion goddesses who proves that we are not what we wear.

Lastly, we are not what we wear because "brand labels are for clothes not for people." A girl who wears Chanel could be labelled as brand conscious but she could actually just be modest. Guys who wear tux could be labelled as rich but they could just be trying to be formal. You could wear a designer while a celebrity might choose not to but that still does not make the celebrity unknown. If I never wear a dress, I would be called a tomboy whereas I'm a real girly girl with a cherry on top so we aren't what we wear because most of us wear clothes that are in style no matter how much we hate them. We aren't really what we wear, it's more of how we are perceived people. We are judged way too easily so then you could say we are judged by what we wear but that doesn't mean we are what people think we are. Our clothes are part of our reputation. People look more on our reputation then at our character. Reputation is merely what others think we are while character is who we really are. So therefore, until we are ripped from our reputations, we are not what we wear.

Good thought, Sherry.
Just seeing worn clothes can't be used to guess one's personality, right?

if the clothes would tell the person being good or bad, Indian democracy would have had never seen a single corrupt politician! So it's just a matter of taste, and sometimes the need of the hour(like you are at a party/college/etc.) rather than giving hints on what the person is. Though looking presentable shows a person being careful of their appearance/presentation but most of the times, it doesn't really matter! :) nice article, by the way! :D
